The Savages (2007)
Directed by Tamara Jenkins
***1/4
There's nothing like losing a loved one, except if it's losing them over a long, drawn out, painful length of time. Diving head-first into the realism of the younger generation caring for the elder, The Savages really, truly works. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney turn in wonderfully rich performances as the brother and sister whose lives are interrupted when their father takes a turn for the senile and must be moved closer to home. Each had thrived on independence, so when the three come together, all sorts of inadequacies and idiosyncrasies surface. What is tolerable? What is successful? What is family like, anyway?
