Say Anything... (1989)
Directed by Cameron Crowe
***1/4
Lloyd Dobler is your average teenage guy of the 80s: awkward, struggling to be cool, and in love way over his head. The girl he's fallen for is the valedictorian, and he doesn't manage to ask her out until after high school's already over. Cameron Crowe manages to avoid most of the rom-com stock that had already become cliché by 1989. Instead, he goes for quirky, audacious, and visual — such as the poster image which became as famous as the film itself. John Cusack is just as enjoyable as a teenager as he is now as a middle-aged man, and Ione Skye is just lovable enough to help you string along to see what will become of this apparently mismatched pair in love. John Mahoney rounds out the story's complexity as her father, who seems almost too perfect of a dad to be true.
(close your ears Michele) I hated this movie. It was insipid and well unbelievable. Even for teenagers. How's that for strong feelings? :)
