Buena Vista Social Club (1999)
Directed by Wim Wenders
****
One of the many cinematic wonders in a great year for film, this documentary takes an up close and personal look at the aging Cuban musicians who contributed to the Grammy-award-winning album of the same name. Their stories are fascinating, the music is delicious, and the edges of this documentary are filled with the small moments of life in Havana. It's definitely a broken place, but these men and women have human hearts, with all the accompanying glories and glitches. The music is worth the watch. The stories are, too.
