Jonestown: The Life and Death of People's Temple (2006)
Directed by Stanley Nelson
****
This is one of the hardest-hitting documentaries I've seen. Anyone who has ever had a glimpse of personality-led religion (I've seen far more than I care to admit) should give this a careful look. It's the riveting, weird, mesmerizing tale of Jim Jones, his fight for racial equality, and his church ... that slid slowly, but inevitably, into bewitched madness. It was powerful enough that I doubt I will use the expression "drink the Koolaid" casually ever again. And I believe it should serve as a powerful warning to all of us, we who have the tendency to look to our fellow, broken, image-bearers for life guidance rather than to the Maker.
