A Good Year (06)
directed by Ridley Scott
***
This is not really a Ridley Scott movie. It's more like Cast Away set in the south of France ... or The Grinch in Whoville ... except not as well-executed or meaningful. Russell Crowe is The Greedy Bad Man, whose underhanded trading ways are about to set London's stock market aflame. Provence is The Place of Healing, with faithful sidekick ex-pat Albert Finney (aka, Uncle Henry or The Revered One) to give it some personality. When The Greedy Bad Man shows up unexpectedly in The Place of Healing, he remembers The Revered One and thinks about changing his life. Running into Marion Cotillard, The Local Hot Waitress, doesn't hurt, either. There's slightly more to this film than that, like interested visuals and a couple good performances, but it also doesn't get much more cookie cutter than this. I give it points for trying, kind of.
