The Island (2005)
Directed by Michael Bay
**3/4
Yes, I know, I know. Michael Bay. I actually watched this because I had heard it stole so many plot points from other movies. And boy, does it ever! Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Coma, Logan's Run, 12 Monkeys, etc, etc. In fact, the source I thought was closest was Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go.
Oh, the story? After a supposed "contamination", a couple thousand survivors are starting over at a highly protected facility. The lucky ones are selected periodically by lottery to go to the last safe place on earth ... say it with me ... the Island. Unfortunately, one dude (Ewan McGregor + American accent) is about to find out the truth. Duh-duh-duhhhhhh!!!! The cinematography, a few interesting scenes and Scarlett Johanssen keep this from being an entire wash out. But yep, it's a stinker.
